Two Years After the Attempted Chitauri Invasion

Ariana clambered up into Clint’s lap, just missing kneeing him somewhere sensitive. Clint winced, quickly shifting her to the side. “I think you’re getting a bit big to sit on my lap, Button,” he commented.

She considered this for a minute before shaking her head. “Nope,” she declared.

“Your daughter,” he mouthed to Natasha who was watching them with amusement. Ariana picked up one of the arrowheads he had been working with and began fiddling with it. Clint glanced at it quickly to be sure it wouldn’t harm her, than let her be when he saw it was a simple blunt tip. After a few minutes, he asked, “Was there something in particular you wanted, Button?”

Ariana continued fiddling with the arrowhead for a few more minutes. Finally she said, “How did you meet Mommy?”

“What do you mean?” Clint asked, stalling for time.

“Well, Auntie Pep met Unca Tony when she started working for him. And Miss Better met Greenie when they were in school. Uncle Coulson met the cellist when he protected her. And Auntie Jane met Uncle MewMew when she hit him with her car. So how did you meet Mommy?”

“Uh… Uh…” Clint looked at Natasha with wide eyes. “I met Mommy…” he started. “You see there was this pretty villa. And your mommy…”

“Dad-dy,” Ariana interrupted him, rolling her eyes.

“Well, I was still working in the circus and one night your mom…” Clint stopped as Ariana shook her head. “No?”

“No.”

“How about?” Clint suggested, “I was in London…”

“Daddy, I want the real story,” Ariana told him.

Clint shifted Ariana in his arms, looking across at Natasha. “Button, the real story isn’t very nice.”

She crossed her arms, glaring up at him. “I want the real story,” she repeated stubbornly.

Clint sighed. “All right then.” Settling her down against him, he tried to figure out the best way to explain it to her. “When I worked just for SHIELD, I would get assignments. One day, I was told to find a woman code-named the Black Widow.”

“That’s Mommy!” Ariana exclaimed.

“It is, but I didn’t know that then. All I knew was she was supposed to be a bad woman and my boss wanted her taken care of.”

Ariana’s gray eyes widened. “He wanted you to hurt Mommy?”

“Yes,” Clint said simply, running his hand down Ariana’s red hair. “So I searched and searched and finally found this Black Widow.” He glanced at Natasha, who had set her book down in her lap and was listening almost as raptly as Ariana. “Mommy didn’t want me to succeed and she’s very skilled so she fought me.”

Natasha snorted a little at his words. “I had to see if you were worthy.”

“Is that what that was?” Clint asked. “But I beat you.” He added in a mutter, “The only time I ever have.”

“You beat me in your dreams, Barton,” Natasha told him. “I surrendered to you.”

“My boss wanted me to execute the Black Widow, whom I now knew as Natasha Romanov, but I saw something there. I saw a woman who wanted to have a choice for once in her life. So I made another call.”

Ariana snuggled against him. “I’m glad you didn’t kill Mommy,” she said.

“So am I,” Clint told her. “I got the two best parts of my life because I didn’t.”

Ariana grinned at him. “Thank you for telling me, Daddy.” She squirmed until he let her go, sliding off his lap. Running over to Natasha, she tugged her mother down until she could kiss the assassin’s cheek. “I love you, Mommy.”

“I love you, too, baby,” Natasha told her in Russian.

With a giggle, Ariana ran out of the room. Natasha waited until she was sure the little girl was gone before getting gracefully to her feet and crossing the room to Clint. Settling in his lap, she wrapped her arms around his neck. “I’m glad you didn’t kill me either,” she told him.

“Best decision I ever made,” he informed her and sealed it with a kiss.
