Author's Note: So I watched CAWS a little while ago and I got to thinking about it (and then watched it again.) And I know I’ve been wondering where Clint is. This is kind of my answer. Or well my answer that fits in this world. And I know it messes with the timeline a bit where Ariana doesn’t meet her Bucky until she’s 14, but it never says in here that… well you’ll see.
Two and a Half Years and After the Attempted Chitauri Invasion
“Mommy!” Ariana yelled excitedly into the phone. “Where are you? Is Captain with you? Are you coming to get me and Daddy soon?”
“I’m going to be a bit longer, dyetka. Could you give the phone to Daddy please?” Natasha asked.
Ariana crawled across the bed, grabbing Yastreb as she went, and tumbled into Clint’s lap. “Mommy,” she told him.
“I never would have guessed, Button,” he told her dryly. He put the phone up to his ear as Ariana curled up next to him, Yastreb held tightly in her arms. “Hey, Tash. You safe?”
“For the moment.” There was a pause as she apparently listened to something from someone on her end. “I’m in DC with Steve and Sam Wilson. Are you and Ariana still in New York?”
“We are,” he confirmed. “At the apartment.”
“Do me a favor and head for Stark’s place. Things are going to get a bit… rocky in the next few days.”
“What are you planning?” he asked. “I got the alert about Steve. Not that I believe it for a minute.”
“Hydra infiltrated SHIELD. From the very beginning. Steve has a plan to takedown Insight. Maria’s going to help us. And we’re going to release everything onto the internet. All the files, all our aliases, everything. I don’t know if there’s anything about Ariana in the databases and I want her and you somewhere you’ll be safe.”
“And you think Stark will be safe?”
“Safer than our apartment which I know is in the database.”
“So apparently we shouldn’t have left the Tower?” Clint asked.
“I didn’t say that. It did Ariana good not to stay in that atmosphere, but I’d rather you go there now.”
“We’ll head there as soon as I pack up Ariana’s things,” Clint told her. “I’ve got go bags packed, but she’ll want some of her other things.”
“Pack lightly, Clint. They’ve been occupied by other things, but they’ll come after you sooner rather than later. I’ve already transferred our funds into new accounts. I’ll send you the information securely,” Natasha said.
“Do you want to talk to Ariana while I start packing?” Clint nudged Ariana who’d been playing quietly with Yastreb as her parents spoke.
“For a minute,” Natasha decided.
“Here, Button.” Clint handed the phone to Ariana. “Mommy will talk to you now.”
Ariana sat up quickly, grabbing the phone with one hand. She tucked Yastreb under her other arm. “Mommy, I want you to come home.”
“I want to come home too, dyetka. But I need to help Captain with something first. Daddy’s going to take you back to the Tower. I need you to be a good girl and do what Daddy says.”
“Da, Mommy.”
“And when I say do what Daddy says, I mean no playing games. Stay safely inside where Stark and JARVIS can protect you.”
“Da, Mommy. But Daddy protects me.”
“I know he does. Sometimes even your daddy needs help though.”
“I love you, Mommy,” Ariana said as Clint came back into the room, laden with their go bags and another backpack full of things.
“Ya lyooblYOO tebYA takzhe. I’ll see you soon. Give the phone to Daddy.”
Ariana knelt on the bed, handing the phone to Clint. “If I can’t…” Natasha started.
“We’re good, Tasha,” Clint cut her off. “Just get yourself to the Tower as soon as you’re able. And call us as soon as you’re done with… your assignment,” he edited what he was going to say since Ariana was listening attentively.
“I will. Get going. I sent the information you need.”
“Send me an alert when you release everything,” Clint said as he balanced the bags. “We’re bugging out now.”
“I’m dismantling this phone. I’ll contact you on another one when I can.”
“Ariana says be careful,” Clint said before she hung up. “We love you.”
A beep signaled that Natasha had hung up on the other end. Clint sighed, looking down at Ariana who was bouncing slightly on the bed. “We have to move fast, Button. Think you can hang on or you want me to strap you on?”
“Strap me down, Daddy,” Ariana decided.
“Okay front or back?”
She considered this for a minute, her head tilted to the side before answering, “Back?”
“You got it.” Clint scooped up the straps he normally used to hold Ariana to his back from the dresser and turned around so she could clamber her way into position. When she felt she was secure, he wrapped the first strap around the two of them and hooked it into place. The next one went under her bottom, holding her tight against him. She would hold onto his shoulder tabs, but if she let go, she wouldn’t fall off. Once she was settled, he grabbed their go bags and her backpacks, situating them on his body before attaching his quiver to his hip and picking up his bow. “All right, Button. You got Yastreb? All ready?”
“Ready, Daddy,” she agreed.
“Let’s go then.” Without a backward glance at the apartment, he headed out. He had all he absolutely needed with him or headed towards him in a few days. He’d always liked to travel light.
