Author’s Note: Let’s just come right out and say this: AU because the whole idea is an Alternate Universe and even if it wasn’t… it would get Joss’ed when the movie comes out in May anyway. So AU.
The Assistants are not superheroes, although they might seem that way to outsiders. If anything they are Avenger whisperers. On the surface the job seems simple—do whatever their Avenger requires. But it’s so much more than that; they are best friend, confidant, assimilator, secretary, wrangler, mother/father, comforter, and scolder all rolled into one. Sometimes these people might be the only one who can calm the Avenger down after a battle or the only one who can get through to an injured superhero.
Each Assistant is carefully chosen to be most compatible with their matched Avenger. On the surface they might not appear to work well together, but only a rare pairing does not work right.
Isabella Teague
Isabella is Natasha Romanov’s Assistant. Like Natasha, she often plays the femme fatale when sent in undercover. As an ex-CIA agent, she’s been trained in counter-intelligence and insurgency. She is fluent in Russian, Pashtu, and Arabic. She is of average height with a curvy figure and blonde hair and blue eyes.
Olivia Donner
Bruce Banner’s Assistant is a slight Vietnamese woman who doubles as the team’s medic. Educated at Johns Hopkins, Olivia isn’t quite at the genius level her Avenger is, but she can follow most of what he says. She has an almost Zen-like calmness that helps keep Bruce centered and assists in the infirmary on when not needed as Bruce’s Assistant. She is a poor shot with a gun, although she is trained as required by all SHIELD agents, and tries to avoid being in the field unless absolutely necessary. She tends to take as much of a back scenes role when out in the field as possible.
Olivia was born in Vietnam, but adopted at age five by a single mother. She was raised in a small town in Oregon. She is fluent in Vietnamese, but learned it as an adult. She is a lesbian (which is known by the other Assistants and Avengers and she is protected by them), although not vocal about it. At 4’11, she is the smallest of the Assistants with black hair and eyes.
Tessa Monroe
Tessa was chosen as Clint Barton’s Assistant because of her background in the military. She achieved a rank of Specialist in the Army before moving to the reserves. She is not officially a SHIELD agent, although she is accorded the honorific agent and must report in to Coulson as part of her job. (There are a select number of military people who liaise with SHIELD to assist as needed.) She is trained in hand to hand and special tactics with a specialty in close quarters silent weaponry. She has much of the same training as Special Forces, although she was not actually in the Special Forces because of being female. While in the military, she was a lone special operations eliminator for individual targets.
Tessa lived in Germany for a while as a child and learned German while there. In addition she speaks Russian, Farsi, and Tolkien Elvish. During a long deployment, she got bored and taught herself the Elvish. She has an interest in the medieval times and weapons. Because of her knowledge, she is currently banned from the Met. At 5’2”, she doesn’t look like she’d be dangerous, but she can take down men who easily outweigh her. Her black hair and green eyes give her a slightly exotic look.
Jack Douglas
As Steve Rogers’s Assistant, one of Jack’s main jobs is to help Captain Rogers acclimate to the 21st century. The main reason Jack was chosen is because he and Rogers have similar backgrounds. Like Rogers, he was raised by a single mother; although his mother is still alive. He was born and raised in the Bronx, but knows the rest of the city equally as well.
Jack is an active duty captain in the Marine Corps who is currently assigned to SHIELD. He attended OCS (Officer Candidates School) at Quantico after ROTC in high school and college. He was also a Recon Marine. Part of his training included tactical and strategic thinking. He has a degree in history with a concentration in military history from NYU and is a current events buff which makes him ideal to assist Rogers in becoming knowledgeable about the timeline.
At 6’2”, Jack is as tall as Rogers, but not nearly as well-muscled, although under normal circumstances he would be able to hold his own. With brown hair and brown eyes, he bears an unfortunate resemblance to Bucky Barnes. Although it caused a rocky start to their relationship, Jack and Steve soon became fast friends and Jack is one of the few people Steve trusts outside of the Avengers.
Mark Jefferies
After the Halloween Trick or Treating Incident, Fury demanded that Coulson detail an Assistant to Thor. The first man chosen was Mark Jefferies, a SHIELD agent skilled in weapons and demolitions. A student of Norse history, he was chosen to quickly fill the void that they thought was there.
Unfortunately from the beginning he caused nothing but trouble. He was very in awe of Thor and the other Avengers who were considered “super-human”. He had derisive comments for the ones that weren’t and thought they were weird and unusual—often asking the other Assistants for stories of the “strangest” thing their Avenger had done. Unlike the other Assistants (and SHIELD agents), he treated Thor like a god rather than a person. He continually made inappropriate comments to the women, causing issues with the other members of the teams.
Mark is the type of man who thinks he is better looking than most other people do. He is not an unattractive man, but his personality makes him look less attractive.
Nick Hojem
Nick was chosen to replace Mark as Thor’s Assistant after numerous complaints against the other man. He is also a SHIELD agent, but is trained in special tactics and hand to hand combat. He is unimpressed with the whole “Mighty Thor, god of Thunder” stick, although he treats the other man with respect and accords him the reverence he should when the other Asgardians are around.
Nick was born Niels Hojem in Oslo, Norway, but his parents anglicized his name to Nicholas when they moved to the United States when he was three to make school easier on him. His parents still call him Niels when they speak with him, although he prefers to be addressed as Nick. He does not object to being called “Niels”, although it is now more a family/pet name than his actual name. It’s been many years since anyone outside of his family and a few select friends called him that. He is fluent in Norwegian and reads Old Norse. In addition he has extensively studied Norwegian history and mythology.
Nick stands 6’4” in his stocking feet and is heavily muscled, but Thor dwarfs him (a fact the other Assistants take delight in teasing him about) and has closely cropped blonde hair and ice blue eyes.
Virginia “Pepper” Potts
Pepper is Tony Stark’s Assistant. She is also the CEO of Stark Enterprises. Fury declared Tony did not need an Assistant other than her because he was only a consultant. Pepper is well able to deal with Tony-wrangling, run Stark Enterprises, almost take over the free world, acquire anything the Avengers or Assistants need/want (Natasha swears she could find God if they needed) and most likely do it all with one arm behind her back. She’s also one of the few people who can bring Tony to heel. (*Canon character)
Jarvis
The computer AI system that Tony Stark designed that runs his house and Iron Man suit. He programed it to have its own personality. (*Canon character)
