Bookstore Trip

I should not be let loose in a bookstore...really I should not. I went out to Borders yesterday to grab two books the [livejournal.com profile] emocezi  recommended to me. And since I had two coupons I wanted to use them...um 80 some dollars later I walked out.

On the plus side? I saved almost 28 dollars...but seriously...do not let me go into a bookstore people. I wasn't supposed to go until I finished Writo de Mayo.

Oh image heavy below the cut...I wanted to share the covers with y'all.

So anyway, the books I got:

First the two [livejournal.com profile] emocezi  recc'ed to me:

Generation Kill by Evan Wright

Night Stalkers by Michael J. Durant and Steven Hartov

And then I started wandering:

River Marked by Patricia Briggs

The Native Star by M.K. Hobson

Green-Eyed Demon by Jaye Wells (this is book 3 of a series--I have the other two and have almost finished them)

Horse Soldiers by Doug Stanton (this was my steal--it was on the bargain rack for 2.99)

Write Starts by Hal Zina Bennett

Plot vs Character by Jeff Gerke

*sighs* And now I need to go get dressed and go shopping again since I didn't get everything done yesterday.

*writes down books*

Hee right? I couldn't ass up the Horse Soldiers not for 2.99.

[identity profile] celestialgldfsh.livejournal.com 2011-05-08 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I just read Native Star! Also, what did you think of the Jaye Wells books? She's one of my agent-siblings and I haven't gotten to read her yet. I keep seeing River Marked mentioned everywhere...

Best typo ever.

/pets you/

I know the feeling. It's got to the point where I only ever go to bookstores with friends who can prevent me from buying more books. God knows how I'm going to ship the half-dozen boxes full of the damn things I've already got home...

[identity profile] sarmsank.livejournal.com 2011-05-08 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Is Horse Soldiers with the Greison's? I am sure I spelled the name wrong it has been years since I wrote it, if so, he was on my father's side of the family.

Enjoy your books! Bookstores are so much fun!

[identity profile] lillyg.livejournal.com 2011-05-08 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol! I was going to say the same. The worse is in a book exhibit, when you have pretty signatures from the authors (I'm reduced to a stuttering mess when I see Harlan Coben). And when I find a shop with perfect books very cheap, I can't control myself :p. On Amazon I bought the Shadow of the Wind for 1 cent. The book was in perfect shape with just a mark, if you dunno it's here, you don't notice it.

[identity profile] shanachie-quill.livejournal.com 2011-05-08 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I picked up Native Star on a lark...the cover caught my eye and the blurb on the back looked interesting so hopefully it lives up to it. I've been disappointed with a few books lately.

I like her books. She's quirky and a pretty decent read. I inadvertently read book 2 first, but it was good enough that I've gone back to book one and am about halfway through so I figured I'd pick up three while I was out.

I like Briggs and so far unlike a lot of other writers in that...genre for lack of a better word, she hasn't slide into the churning out books. I'd rather wait a bit longer for a good book than get one every other month. I've given up on Hamilton, lost interest in Charlene Harris really fast, and there's a couple others I don't read anymore because they just seem to be writing them to get the credits or whatever.

[identity profile] shanachie-quill.livejournal.com 2011-05-08 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
AUUUGH I didn't even notice! *face palm*

[identity profile] shanachie-quill.livejournal.com 2011-05-08 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Can you introduce me to these friends? Cause I don't know a single one of my friends who wouldn't have been picking out more books and going "But don't you want this one too?" Books they are my weakness....and really I'm trying to weed OUT my collection.

And we won't even discuss how much I've already spent because the Borders that is closer to my house just went out of business and I went in like three times and dropped at least 150 dollars each time. I did buy DVDs a bunch of visits that time though (including one season of Numb3rs!!)

Also hi! *glomps on you* I've missed you! I've been really, really bad about reading eljay!

/petpet/

It happens to the best of us, sweetie...

[identity profile] shanachie-quill.livejournal.com 2011-05-08 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think so? It's about US Soldiers who joined up with...hang on lemme grab the book. Lemme try this again. It's about a group of US Special Forces who rode against the Taliban. They secretly entered Afghanistan after 9/11 and rode to war on horses. It looked pretty good and at that price I figured why not.

It is very rare that I don't enjoy my books. :-D So much fun but oh so dangerous!

[identity profile] shanachie-quill.livejournal.com 2011-05-08 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
My mom's a librarian so I'm always getting random signatures from authors no one has ever heard of (including me) but I do have a signed copy of Mr. Murder by Dean Koontz...even have a short note from him. *makes a mental note to figure out what box that book is in* I was not lucky enough to meet him though. We got it through a friend.

Duuude and I thought my 2.99 was a steal. Awesome!

[identity profile] shanachie-quill.livejournal.com 2011-05-08 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I know...I continue to be glad I didn't say what popped into my brain about the canollis the other day...I don't think my mother or my grandmother would have ever forgiven me.

/giggles/ Unfortunately as of this month we are going to be in different cities so God only knows what I'm gonna do after that. Mind, my book addiction has gotten to the point where my Mom said I could have anything I liked as a treat for getting a perfect score on my Spanish exam so long as it wasn't a book. /headdesk/

Hee! My addiction is half on account of the fact that my Dad gives me a pretty generous amount of spending money. Since uni is really cheap and I don't really go out that much, guess where it all goes? Plus India now has online book shopping. /groans/ Not that I've had time to read any of the damn things... /headdesk/ Good thing summer is almost upon us...

/glomps back/ Hello! Me too! I haven't been on eljay much myself, RL has eaten me these past few weeks... how goes it?

Oh, I see you that and raise you me bringing up the fact that 'preservatif' in French doesn't mean preservatives, it means condoms. At my freaking grad school interview.

I think they admitted me on the basis of sheer chutzpah...

I hit a bookstore in every port I visit. Hong Kong, Manila, Kuala Lumpur. A lot of book stores in Asia have an unwholesome habit of encasing books in plastic so it's impossible to flip through them and see how they're written. Very annoying.

I've been known to purr while ordering books from Amazon, particularly when several of my favorite authors all have books coming out about the same time. Many of my favorite writers share the same publishing house, so it happens that way fairly often.

How is the Write Starts book working out? DO you find it helpful? Or have you actually started it yet?

[identity profile] shanachie-quill.livejournal.com 2011-05-08 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
ROTFL my mom tried that...to ban me from buying books...but it doesn't really work when she buys them too AND she's a librarian.

*nods* That's nice that he does that. I wish our uni was cheap so I could go back. I miss learning. Although I suppose I could just pick a subject and learn on my own.

Yeah, I don't go out much either...which is why my reading has spiked up.

It goes. I'm not working or well not teaching. They downsized all the schools in the state and pretty much every teacher that had less that three years in their current district lost their jobs. And there's no new ones. So I'm taking care of my gramma. She needed someone and I was available and we'd rather have family than a stranger. It's good days and bad days. She's there mentally--just has some health issues so can't cook and clean (or drive) but she's been getting really cranky lately which is a stresser on both of us. And there are some other family issues. So I can't really complain cause it's a whole lot easier than teaching but it's also 24/7 sometimes without a break...other than that, I'm writing and reading and just trying to stay afloat. :-)

[identity profile] shanachie-quill.livejournal.com 2011-05-08 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
ROTFL I do believe they did...that's awesome! Were you just on a roll and didn't notice what you said?

I only bit my tongue because what popped into my head was "orgasming cocks" and my mother would have killed me. On. The. Spot.

They asked me about potential problems that could crop up while translating, and my teacher had told me this just a couple weeks previous, so it popped out. My face once I realized what I'd said must have been a thing of beauty. Oh well, at least I got a laugh out of my interview board...

Oh dear. Yeah. I can't imagine that would have gone over well. And you have quite possibly permanently ruined cannoli for me...

See, the problem is that my mom isn't that much of a reader and the kind of books she reads are easy to find at the library. I have more obscure, eclectic tastes and we just don't have the kind of public libraries y'all do in the States, so I end up buying books. Plus the Muse has a tendency to overdose on the background research... by which I mean she keeps pointing to random books and going, 'but you NEED that! For fic!' and so the pile grows. /headdesk/

I'm actually really lucky, because my uni was set up to be affordable to anyone who wanted an education. Like, my room rent for an entire semester? Is fifty bucks. In comparison, a hot chocolate at my favourite coffee shop costs eighty. On the flip side, I've been so damn busy the past two years that I just haven't had /time/ to read.

/hugs you/ Wow. You have both my sympathy and my respect. I love my grandmom but I cannot spend more than half an hour in the same room as her without wanting to reach either for alcohol or tranquilizers. And here's hoping for a quick end to family issues AND you getting a nice new job soon. /crosses fingers/

[identity profile] shanachie-quill.livejournal.com 2011-05-08 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That plastic thing would drive me nuts! Generally I read the back cover and a bit inside before I buy something. I've been burned too many times not to want to sample.

LOL I have the same problem. And I read a lot of the same genre so I often get the same issue.

I haven't used it yet...I got home at like 11pm and then I was up until 2:30 but so tired that I didn't want to write or do anything else. I'll probably skim through it over the next few days and maybe post some of the ones I like. Or even use a couple for my Writo de Mayo days.

How are you doing?

[identity profile] shanachie-quill.livejournal.com 2011-05-08 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
*nods* I can see how that could have been an issue. Yes, yes I'm sure it was. And hey at least they had a sense of humor. I know people who wouldn't.

No it would not have gone over well at all...my mother has no sense of humor. I'm sorry *head ducks* I didn't mean to. I sowwy.

[identity profile] shanachie-quill.livejournal.com 2011-05-08 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Send me your email address? By PM? and I'll give you the long involved answer to what all's going on. :-) I'm running out with my mom to go dress shopping *makes a face*

Yes indeed. I'm laughing about it now, but it wasn't so funny at the time. Still, it all worked out. Talk about the capstone to a truly crazy journey. /shakes head/ Remind me to tell you that story one of these days.

/pets/ Don't worry about it. I'm diabetic, so the fewer sweets I'm tempted by, the better... :D

This book is from the Civil War era. Have fun reading your books!

Nope not the same book then.

Exhibits are bad enough, but the worst ones? Library book sales. The British Council has one every so often where they sell off books that have been taken out of circulation. And it's not just that the prices are ridiculously low but that these are books you aren't going to find anywhere else. Pure, a-grade crack. And it doesn't help that a book's condition doesn't really bother me so long as it's readable.

Oh god, now I want to go book-shopping. /hides/

Oh, I hear ya... bookstores... *meeps*

[identity profile] shanachie-quill.livejournal.com 2011-05-09 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, yes, the library book sales. And at least here? The money goes to the libraries...so really...why wouldn't you buy books?

I'm sowwy. I didn't mean to make you want to go shopping.

[identity profile] shanachie-quill.livejournal.com 2011-05-09 12:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously...it's a good thing I'm not getting let out for the next like...2 weeks. I spent a ton of money this past weekend. Granted a lot of it was stuff I need and consumables, but yeah.

Plus my cousins keep getting married and having babies and wow why do they do things like that?

But the bookstore trip this time? Yeah I can't justify it anyway other than...I wanted books and yup I got them.

[identity profile] shanachie-quill.livejournal.com 2011-05-09 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I'm sure you weren't laughing about it at the time. It's things like that where you're like... O.O did I really just say that?

Aww that's not fun. I didn't realize that or didn't know that. My momo is also and one of my good friends. It makes life tough at times.
