According to his bio on the Leverage wiki, he did work for them. For awhile, anyway. Then he went off grid and became a criminal fulltime.
Alec Hardison, like Parker, was an orphan. He lost his parents at an early age but was raised by a foster mother he called Nana. This is known because he quotes her often. Hardison earned a scholarship to Cal Tech where he graduated with a degree in ECE. After Cal Tech he worked as a computer engineer for a number of high tech firms in the Silicon Valley, but moonlighted as a computer hacker for various corporations and powerful individuals. Due to his high level contacts in Silicon Valley, Hardison was able to finagle acceptance to MIT as well as funding for his graduate degree. After MIT Hardison spent 3 years as a classified contractor for the Federal government, where he did work for the CIA and Naval Intelligence. Due to circumstances which are still classified, Hardison broke with the government and went "off the grid," so to speak.
:D I am ridiculously anal about getting stuff right in crossovers. I have three pages of typed notes for a Criminal Minds/Supernatural fic I haven't gotten around to writing yet. XD
