Bookstore Trip

I should not be let loose in a bookstore...really I should not. I went out to Borders yesterday to grab two books the [livejournal.com profile] emocezi  recommended to me. And since I had two coupons I wanted to use them...um 80 some dollars later I walked out.

On the plus side? I saved almost 28 dollars...but seriously...do not let me go into a bookstore people. I wasn't supposed to go until I finished Writo de Mayo.

Oh image heavy below the cut...I wanted to share the covers with y'all.

So anyway, the books I got:

First the two [livejournal.com profile] emocezi  recc'ed to me:

Generation Kill by Evan Wright

Night Stalkers by Michael J. Durant and Steven Hartov

And then I started wandering:

River Marked by Patricia Briggs

The Native Star by M.K. Hobson

Green-Eyed Demon by Jaye Wells (this is book 3 of a series--I have the other two and have almost finished them)

Horse Soldiers by Doug Stanton (this was my steal--it was on the bargain rack for 2.99)

Write Starts by Hal Zina Bennett

Plot vs Character by Jeff Gerke

*sighs* And now I need to go get dressed and go shopping again since I didn't get everything done yesterday.

/pets you/

I know the feeling. It's got to the point where I only ever go to bookstores with friends who can prevent me from buying more books. God knows how I'm going to ship the half-dozen boxes full of the damn things I've already got home...

Lol! I was going to say the same. The worse is in a book exhibit, when you have pretty signatures from the authors (I'm reduced to a stuttering mess when I see Harlan Coben). And when I find a shop with perfect books very cheap, I can't control myself :p. On Amazon I bought the Shadow of the Wind for 1 cent. The book was in perfect shape with just a mark, if you dunno it's here, you don't notice it.

My mom's a librarian so I'm always getting random signatures from authors no one has ever heard of (including me) but I do have a signed copy of Mr. Murder by Dean Koontz...even have a short note from him. *makes a mental note to figure out what box that book is in* I was not lucky enough to meet him though. We got it through a friend.

Duuude and I thought my 2.99 was a steal. Awesome!

Exhibits are bad enough, but the worst ones? Library book sales. The British Council has one every so often where they sell off books that have been taken out of circulation. And it's not just that the prices are ridiculously low but that these are books you aren't going to find anywhere else. Pure, a-grade crack. And it doesn't help that a book's condition doesn't really bother me so long as it's readable.

Oh god, now I want to go book-shopping. /hides/

Oh man, yes, the library book sales. And at least here? The money goes to the libraries...so really...why wouldn't you buy books?

I'm sowwy. I didn't mean to make you want to go shopping.

Can you introduce me to these friends? Cause I don't know a single one of my friends who wouldn't have been picking out more books and going "But don't you want this one too?" Books they are my weakness....and really I'm trying to weed OUT my collection.

And we won't even discuss how much I've already spent because the Borders that is closer to my house just went out of business and I went in like three times and dropped at least 150 dollars each time. I did buy DVDs a bunch of visits that time though (including one season of Numb3rs!!)

Also hi! *glomps on you* I've missed you! I've been really, really bad about reading eljay!

/giggles/ Unfortunately as of this month we are going to be in different cities so God only knows what I'm gonna do after that. Mind, my book addiction has gotten to the point where my Mom said I could have anything I liked as a treat for getting a perfect score on my Spanish exam so long as it wasn't a book. /headdesk/

Hee! My addiction is half on account of the fact that my Dad gives me a pretty generous amount of spending money. Since uni is really cheap and I don't really go out that much, guess where it all goes? Plus India now has online book shopping. /groans/ Not that I've had time to read any of the damn things... /headdesk/ Good thing summer is almost upon us...

/glomps back/ Hello! Me too! I haven't been on eljay much myself, RL has eaten me these past few weeks... how goes it?

[identity profile] shanachie-quill.livejournal.com 2011-05-08 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
ROTFL my mom tried that...to ban me from buying books...but it doesn't really work when she buys them too AND she's a librarian.

*nods* That's nice that he does that. I wish our uni was cheap so I could go back. I miss learning. Although I suppose I could just pick a subject and learn on my own.

Yeah, I don't go out much either...which is why my reading has spiked up.

It goes. I'm not working or well not teaching. They downsized all the schools in the state and pretty much every teacher that had less that three years in their current district lost their jobs. And there's no new ones. So I'm taking care of my gramma. She needed someone and I was available and we'd rather have family than a stranger. It's good days and bad days. She's there mentally--just has some health issues so can't cook and clean (or drive) but she's been getting really cranky lately which is a stresser on both of us. And there are some other family issues. So I can't really complain cause it's a whole lot easier than teaching but it's also 24/7 sometimes without a break...other than that, I'm writing and reading and just trying to stay afloat. :-)

See, the problem is that my mom isn't that much of a reader and the kind of books she reads are easy to find at the library. I have more obscure, eclectic tastes and we just don't have the kind of public libraries y'all do in the States, so I end up buying books. Plus the Muse has a tendency to overdose on the background research... by which I mean she keeps pointing to random books and going, 'but you NEED that! For fic!' and so the pile grows. /headdesk/

I'm actually really lucky, because my uni was set up to be affordable to anyone who wanted an education. Like, my room rent for an entire semester? Is fifty bucks. In comparison, a hot chocolate at my favourite coffee shop costs eighty. On the flip side, I've been so damn busy the past two years that I just haven't had /time/ to read.

/hugs you/ Wow. You have both my sympathy and my respect. I love my grandmom but I cannot spend more than half an hour in the same room as her without wanting to reach either for alcohol or tranquilizers. And here's hoping for a quick end to family issues AND you getting a nice new job soon. /crosses fingers/

Send me your email address? By PM? and I'll give you the long involved answer to what all's going on. :-) I'm running out with my mom to go dress shopping *makes a face*
